Your class instructor and owner of Wyo Traffic School is retired law enforcement officer Gary Shaw. He started his career in 1986 at the Bethany Police Department in Oklahoma for seven years. He moved to Jackson, Wyoming and served the community for 20 years, beginning at the Jackson Police Department where he was a police officer and later a detective until 2005. He then transferred to the Teton Country Sheriff’s Office where he served as a deputy sheriff, investigator, and court security officer until 2013. Gary is now a retired police officer after 27 years of service. Gary is still fondly known as “Uncle Gary” to many in the community, a name he picked up from people who he had assisted in their time of need, investigated their cases, given citations to, and even arrested.
He and his family now live in Star Valley where he is now enjoying his semi-retirement of being a hay farmer and owner/instructor of Wyo Traffic School. Gary’s class is educational, fun and enlightening. He engages with the clients throughout the class and allows everyone to talk about their citations and experience. Gary talks about Wyoming traffic laws, gives his insight as a past peace officer and as a citizen, draws diagrams, shows videos of real traffic stops and helps educate drivers to be more cautious, courteous and to abide by the law. Most people are given the option via the court to take this class and some people come in dreading and complaining about having to take the class. However, they leave the class pleasantly surprised by how much fun they had learning about Wyoming traffic laws and driver safety.
